Why Are We Not Trying To Help Create Jobs?

By admin

boston_massachusettsThis country is going through a tough time an everybody is being affected.  This includes big businesses, small businesses and even those who are trying to make money online.

During the day I work as a credit manager for an insurance replacement company.  As most businesses we are affected by the downturn and are continually trying to sell, even to our existing customers.  Insurance companies are trying to cut costs and expenses and as a result are putting pressure on us to reduce our fees.  How can we continue to survive and keep from cutting jobs, which other companies unfortunately have been forced to do?  Well, Obama’s stimulus plan is the first step. (Who knows if it will actually help)  One of the goals is to get 4 million people back to work.  In order to accomplish this companies need to get healthy so they are willing to hire.  This is where small business is going to be a major factor in the turnaround.  They can create jobs but with a little help.

Our company is located in Massachusetts and we have been lucky over the last two years to be involved in a Workforce Training Program.  It is a program that gives businesses in Massachusetts an incentive to hire.  For each employee hired the company is reimbursed $2000 for training fees with a limit of $30,000 per year.  If the employee stays on for 60 days we are then paid $2000.

You would think giving employers incentive to hire could help turn this economy around and help the unemployement rate.  That’s what I thought until I received a letter from the Commonwealth stating that the program has been put on hold.

“The impact on the the Workforce Training Fund Program administered by the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development is a budget reduction of $9 million.  Consequently, I must regretfully inform you that the Hiring Incentive Grant Program and the WFT Express Program have been put on hold.”

Wasn’t one of Obama’s initiatives to put people back to work?  Not sure, but this seems like anti-jobs to me.

Not sure what others think but leave a note telling me if I am off based on this.
